Pragmatic Play is one of the developers pushing the envelope in terms of originality. I am a huge fan of the network’s Drops & Wins promotion and had a good time with classics like Sweet Bonanza and the John Hunter series. The studio is constantly pushing for the next big thing, and Sumo Supreme Megaways is its latest attempt.

That’s largely the result of the Target Weight feature, which I’m happy to report is very simple once you get the hang of it. It’s all about the numbers below the reels—if they add up to the value shown under “Target Weight”, the feature activates. The main confusion for me came from the lower paying symbols, as they all depict kettlebells with numbers on them.

They are designed to be a replacement for standard playing card icons that remain relevant to the theme, but they’re weights, and it’s a target weight feature, so it looks like they are part of that feature at first.

The main game symbols all represent sumo wrestlers, with the one bordered by a red background offering the biggest payouts. I haven’t even gotten to the best bit yet, as Sumo Supreme Megaways has one of my favourite features of all—Tumbling Reels.

A welcome sight on all slot games, this feature removes winning combinations from the reels and adds new symbols from above. If the wins keep stacking up, it can trigger a chain reaction that runs indefinitely. I didn’t trigger more than a few consecutive wins during my review, but if you get luckier than I did, you can unlock some big payouts.

As it’s a Megaways slot, the paylines are randomised, offering anywhere from a few dozen lines to as many as 7776. The more you trigger, the greater your chance of scooping big wins, though more paylines don’t guarantee a win.

The game adds more entertainment value with the inclusion of a Wild, Scatter, and Extra Weight icon, all of which help to nudge you toward the maximum payout of 12,500x while showing some very interesting features.

I’ll go over these features and everything else that this game has to offer in my review below. There’s a lot to cover, as this title is as meaty and bulky as the sumo wrestlers that fill its reels.

Pro Tips

Like many Megaways titles, Sumo Supreme Megaways has a very high volatility rating. It means you can expect to go on extended losing streaks. I had multiple of these during my own sessions on the game, the biggest of which went for around a dozen spins.

The wins are usually big when they arrive, but it means the game is not suitable for short sessions. I try to make sure I have enough credits for at least 100 spins when I play high-volatility slots, even if it means reducing my usual stake to accommodate such a session.

It’s not a prerequisite, and you could just as easily land a big payout on your first spin. But it reduces the risk of you leaving broke and disappointed. I can’t tell you how many times I have budgeted for 10 or 20 spins on a high volatility slot, only to blow that budget in less than a minute and leave empty-handed. I knew the risk, and I took a chance. Make sure you know the risk as well.

Sumo Supreme Megaways Bonus Features

Megaways was made for Tumbling Reels. These two features work together perfectly and are probably my favourite feature combination. The fact that they are present in both the base game and main feature means there’s always something happening here, and the game’s jackpot can technically be triggered on any spin.

But these aren’t the only features available.

Megaways and Tumbling Reels

Megaways randomise the number of rows in each spin, which means there are varying amounts of potential pay symbols and paylines every time you spin. The current total is in the top left corner.

Every time those symbols land a winning combination, they disappear from the reels courtesy of the Tumbling Reels mechanic. New symbols drop into play, and if they also trigger payouts, the process repeats.

As I said above, this is one of my favourite feature combinations, as it brings life to every spin and means I’m not being forced to wait for the bonus round before anything interesting happens.

Target Weight

The Target Weight icon on the right chooses a number at random. If the value below each reel adds up to this total, the icon will open and reveal a prize, including either a cash award of 0.5x to 500x, multipliers of up to 5x, or Expanding Wilds that drop on the reels.

Your chances of unlocking this feature may be improved with the Extra Weight symbol, a set of gold bars that adds between 11 and 40 to the value.

Wilds

The trophy symbol is the game’s Wild. It can appear on all reels, where it substitutes for other symbols (except the Scatter) and awards a 3x payout for 5 on a payline.

Scatter Symbol

The Scatter is represented by a Japanese fan. It can appear on all game reels, and anywhere from 4 to 9 of these unlocks between 8 and 28 free spins.

Free Spins/Respins

Target Weights are set at the start of the free spin feature and only change after a winning tumble. The spins can be re-triggered by revealing 4 or more Scatters. Special reels are active during this round and the Tumbling Reels and Megaways remain, as well.

I didn’t notice too many changes from the base game to the free spins, but that’s to be expected, as a lot of positives carry over.

Sumo Supreme Megaways on Mobile

The reels on Sumo Supreme Megaways are very busy, with a lot of action in and around the grid. I was concerned that it wouldn’t translate to mobile very well, but I had no issues using iOS or Android devices. I even have a very small (and old) Android phone I use just for this purpose, and it worked fine on there.

My best experience was using an iPad or iPhone, but that has more to do with my preferences for larger screens and the crispness of the graphics on these screens.

Conclusion

Usually, an Asian-themed slot is one filled with waving cats, ceremonial bowls, and gold coins. The Sumo Supreme Megaways slot takes a different approach. There is still a copious amount of red and gold, but the paraphernalia has been swapped for wrestlers, and the reels have been filled with free spins, Megaways, Tumbling Reels, and a unique Target Weight feature.

There’s a lot to like and not much to dislike. It could have been better, certainly, but it’s still a solid effort from an excellent developer.
