Pro Tips

The Wild symbols are the most potent. They are the symbols you’ll want to see the most on the reels. They form big payouts on their own, but they also complete other combinations and add multipliers of up to 32x.

The respins during the main feature (see below) benefit greatly from the Wilds, as they complete the paylines you need to trigger a respin and also add to the wins you’ve already got.

Don’t forget, though, that this game has medium to high volatility. You could take dozens of spins and not see enough Wilds to trigger a big payout. I wasn’t that unfortunate in my sessions, but I got lucky and could be the exception.

As noted above, Ruby Royal gives off the sort of retro vibes that make you think you’re playing a slot with little more than Scatter Pays to offer in the feature department. I half expected to encounter a “Nudge” button. In actual fact, there are several features hiding behind those century-old slot symbols.

There are substitution Wilds that leave multipliers in their wake; Scatter symbols that trigger up to 20 free spins, and respins with locked symbols. It might look retro, but the features are definitely modern, and they ensure every spin is interesting and there is always something to aim for.

Wilds

The Wild symbol is a glitzy neon sign that can land on any of the slot’s reels. It substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter, and it adds multipliers to any win that it helps to form.

The size of the multiplier depends on the number of Wilds that appear on the payline:

• 1 Wild = 2x multiplier
• 2 Wilds = 4x multiplier
• 3 Wild = 8x multiplier
• 4 Wild = 16x multiplier
• 5 Wild = 32x multiplier

Scatter Symbol

The red ruby is the game’s Scatter. It can appear on all of the reels, and you need 3 to unlock the feature.

There are a couple of things to note here. Firstly, there is no guarantee that you will win anything from these spins, so don’t assume that you’ll get your stake back. I tried the most expensive option on three occasions and got 398x, 1,100x, and 250x. Those are some wide ranges stemming from very high volatility, so don’t rush into this decision.

Secondly, this option is not available in some jurisdictions, including the UK.

Free Spins/Respins

The Scatter awards either 10, 15, or 20 free spins, depending on whether you get 3, 4, or 5 of these symbols to launch the feature. There is no Scatter Pay feature, so you won’t get an additional payout when it lands.

You will get a big free spins feature, though, and if you get another 3 Scatter symbols during one of those free spins, another 10 spins will be added to your total.

There are respins active on each of these spins, but these will only trigger if you get a winning combination. The symbols in that combination lock in place while all of the other symbol places spin again. If there is another payout, whether from a new payline or a matching symbol being added to an existing win, the reels will spin again.

It can keep going in this manner until there are no more wins or no more spaces for them, at which point the payout is released and the next free spin begins.

The one time that I unlocked this feature organically, it triggered a payout of 209x, and 190x of that came from a single spin. It was disappointing that I couldn’t add much more to that 190x with the other spins, but I certainly wasn’t complaining, especially as it took me fewer than 20 spins to activate the feature.

Ruby Royal Slot on Mobile

I feel that retro slots like this are tailor-made for mobile players.

Most of the background disappears, and the action focuses on the slot itself. There aren’t too many menus and options getting in the way, and the limited reels and rows mean it’s easy to see what you’re doing and the reels move smoothly and quickly.

I tried the slot on tablets and smartphones using iOS and Android platforms. My best experience was on an iPad, but that’s my personal preference more than anything, and it looked great on all the devices I tried.

My Final Verdict

I had preconceptions about this slot being a basic, retro game with very little to offer in the features department. Thankfully, those preconceptions were dispelled very quickly, and not too long after learning about the features, I unlocked one and landed a big win.

I also picked up a 1,100x payout after testing the Buy Feature option (although it did cost me over a third of that amount).

So, while I would have liked to see better graphics, I certainly can’t argue with the payouts or features. It’s a retro slot, so what you see is usually what you get. This time, however, what you get is a lot more than what you see.
