The free spins feature was the highlight for me in this slot, and not only because I got lucky. It’s clear that there is a lot of potential in this feature, even though it can take many spins to unlock it.

Still, with Cluster Pays and Cascading Reels in the base game, those spins won’t be wasted.

Cluster Pays and Cascading Reels

The Cluster Pays mechanic swaps traditional paylines for clusters—get 8 matching symbols that connect to trigger a payout. The game’s symbols include a Crown, Shield, and Drum, as well as a Scatter, but you don’t need to form a cluster for this one.

Once a win forms, the symbols responsible will explode and disappear off the reels. New ones fall into place from above, and if there is another payout, the process will repeat. This can keep happening until there are no more wins or the game reaches its maximum payout.

Scatter

The Scatter symbol triggers the main feature (see below), but it also awards an instant payout. This begins at just 3x for 4 Scatters but jumps to 5x for 5 Scatters and 100x for 6 Scatters.

Free Spins

The free spins are launched with 4 to 6 Scatters and offer 10, 20, or 30 free spins.

The first time I activated the free spins feature in Keys to the Sea, I won 636x my stake. At the time, it was the most I had won for weeks. Thinking it was a one-off, I didn’t have high hopes the second time around, but I walked away with 185x.

This was just my personal experience, of course, and it might not translate to your own experience. Still, that was an impressive win, and I couldn’t pass up the chance to tell someone about it!

There is a “Buy Bonus” option, but it’s not available in the UK. It also costs 100x your stake. It would have been worthwhile for me, as both of my triggers paid more than that, but you could just as easily walk away with nothing.

Multiplier

The Multiplier symbol can appear during the free spins. It triggers a random multiplier of between 2x and 100x and stays on the reels until the end of the current cascade. It’s because of this feature that I won so much the first time around, as I had a 6x and then a 100x.

I said that I wasn’t initially impressed with the design of Keys to the Sea, and that’s true, but it did grow on me a little.

The issue is that it looks static and flat. The symbols are simple, the waves don’t move, and besides Popiplay’s characteristic glinting symbols, there is no dynamism on the reels.

It could use a little splash of 3D or an animation or two to bring the design to life. There’s a lot to like here, but the game didn’t really welcome me with a bang. It’s like watching a great film with a boring opening scene.

If you’re ready to play the Keys to the Sea slot for real money, follow these simple steps:

There is a “Buy Bonus” option for 100x, as well as a Chance X Booster that increases the odds of the feature landing and costs 25% more. The former is not available in the UK, but the latter should be.

The Keys to the Sea slot reels are substantial, but they translate well to the smaller screens of smartphones and tablets.

I tested the game on an old Android and a new iPhone, and didn’t have any issues with either of them. I usually prefer playing on an iPad, but in this case, there wasn’t much of a difference between the bigger tablet screen and smaller smartphone screen.

What Is My Verdict?

I could be very biased with the Keys to the Sea slot, as I collected two huge wins the first two times I unlocked the feature. That rarely happens. But I’m here to look at things critically and…it’s still hard to pick fault.

The game looks great, and the combination of Cluster Pays and Cascading Reels, along with the free spins and multipliers, makes for an excellent combo. More features wouldn’t have gone amiss, including some modifiers, but it’s a great slot, nonetheless.
