My Verdict of the Irish Crown Slot

I expected something simple when first loading this slot, but I found much more hiding underneath the surface, including a glut of features. It has all the hallmarks of a modern Megaways slot, or at least something with a huge grid and lots of paylines, but they are crammed into a small 5×3 grid with just 20 paylines.

It’s a quality title that I thoroughly enjoyed playing, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if that grid had been expanded and there had been more paylines.

Pros & Cons of the Irish Crown Slot

Retro-style slots can be a little hit-and-miss for me, so I reserved judgment of Irish Crown initially. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that while it has a vintage style, it also comes packed with features, including some unexpected surprises. There are Mystery Symbols, Wilds, huge multipliers, and a free spins round, and that’s just the appetiser.

My only criticism of the slot is that it could have used more paylines and a bigger grid. I don’t want to be greedy and call for additional modifiers or Tumbling Reels, as there is a lot going on already, but it would have certainly held my interest longer if there had been more happening in the base game.

Pros
  • Thumbs-Up Free spins
  • Thumbs-Up Mystery Symbols
  • Thumbs-Up Unique Leprechaun feature in free spins
  • Thumbs-Up Jackpot Bonus
  • Thumbs-Up Multipliers
Cons
  • Thumbs-Down Limited number of paylines

Pro Tips

Irish Crown has the feel of a retro slot, but it has the features of more modern titles. It took me by surprise in this aspect, and if you’re new to slot games or you’re only familiar with old-school titles, you may struggle with this.

For that reason, I recommend checking out the paytable to get accustomed to the game first. Just click or tap the “i” icon. You can also read the rest of my Irish Crown review, of course, as I discuss all of those features and gaming mechanics here.

Irish Crown Slot Bonus Features and Free Spins

irish crown big win

The base game in the Irish Crown slot leaves a little to be desired. It looks like a busy grid, but the game builds up to its unlockable features, including a free spins round that includes a cheeky little Leprechaun.

Wilds

On its own, the Wild symbol offers the highest payouts of any symbol in the game, giving you 25x for landing five on a payline. It also substitutes for other main game symbols (coloured gems and playing card icons) and can help to complete winning combinations.

Crown Symbols

The Crown symbol can land anywhere on the game reels. It plays a big part in the free spins feature, discussed below, but it also lands during the base game. Anywhere from three to nine of these symbols will give you a payout of up to 40x, and if you get 10 of them, a unique Big Money Bonus Game launches.

This is where the meter on the side of the game reels comes in, as each step relates to a Crown symbol.

Big Money Bonus

When the feature starts, the reels disappear, and the triggering Crown symbols remain. The reels will then respin, and the goal is to collect as many Crowns as you can. Fill the game grid with these symbols to activate the Super Reel and get rewards of between 250x and the maximum payout of 5,000x.

If it sounds familiar, it’s because it functions a lot like the Hold and Win feature seen in games like Wolf Power Hold and Win.

Mystery Symbols

The game’s logo is the Mystery symbol. Appearing on all of the reels, it transforms into other symbols when it lands. So, if you land a payline full of Mystery symbols, you’re guaranteed a win, although RNG dictates which symbol it becomes and how big that win will be.

The Wild is the only paying symbol that it can’t transform into.

Scatter Symbol

The lucky four-leaf clover serves as the game’s Scatter and can appear on the second, third, and fourth reels. All three Scatters are needed to launch the main feature, so expect a few near misses. I certainly had my fair share of them.

Free Spins

The free spins feature gives you 10 free spins with the addition of a Leprechaun symbol. This little guy can only appear on the final reel and turns the lower-paying symbols (10, J, Q, K, and A) into Crowns.

The Wild is also active in the feature, but everything else is pretty much the same as the base game. The most notable aspect for me is that it only takes a single Scatter to retrigger the feature, earning an extra two free spins. Two Scatters adds an additional five spins, and you’ll get 10 more spins from three Scatters.

I won 27x during my first playthrough of this feature, and that included a couple of extra free spins triggered via a Scatter on one of my first free spins. There’s an option to buy the feature (not available in the UK), but it costs 100x, so it’s a huge risk.

Irish Crown Slot Design and Visuals

The classic Irish theme and standard 5×3 layout creates a retro-style game, while the many bonuses produces an experience reminiscent of the massively popular Rainbow Riches. It’s bright, it’s colourful, it’s quirky, and there is also an obligatory leprechaun thrown in for good measure.

It’s not the best-looking slot I’ve seen, and there is very little depth and dynamism, but it succeeds in what it sets out to do, which is create an eye-catching, Irish-themed slot.

How to Play the Irish Crown Slot

I didn’t have any complicated features or mechanics to learn when loading the Irish Crown slot. It’s very straightforward.

Here’s how I approached this game and how you can do the same:

  • I checked the default stake (£2) and changed it using the plus and minus buttons
  • I turned off the sound using the speaker icon (bottom left)
  • I clicked the gear icon for more settings
  • I opened the paytable by clicking the “i” button
  • Ready to play, I pressed the big spin button between the wager buttons

Irish Crown Slot Mobile Compatibility

After trying the Irish Crown slot on both Android and iOS devices, I can confirm that it works seamlessly on both. I usually prefer iPhones or iPads, but I didn’t notice a difference with this slot. The features are all the same, and the buttons are neatly spaced to facilitate a smooth experience.

Closing Thoughts

The slot sector does not lack Irish-themed slots, and Irish Crown doesn’t really do anything to set itself apart from the crowd. But that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. The theme might be a little worn out, but the feature combinations, including free spins and multipliers, make it a worthwhile experience.

FAQs

If you still have questions about the Irish Crown slot, get in touch and I’ll try to help. You can also learn more in the FAQs below.

It references the Crown symbol. If you get 10, you will trigger the Big Money feature.

You can scoop the game’s maximum payout of 5,000x during this feature.

He appears on the final reel and transforms the small symbols into Crowns, potentially producing bigger payouts in the process.

You can’t if you’re in the UK, as this option is not available to UK players. It should be available elsewhere, though, and costs 100x your stake. Remember that there is no guarantee of winning a profit or even getting a modest return when using this option.
