  • Thumbs-Up Cascading reels feature
  • Thumbs-Up Excellent visuals
Cons

It seems like now and again, a video slot developer realizes that a couple of weeks have gone by without a new Egyptian-themed video slot and decides to right that most evil of wrongs. And this time around we have Popiplay to thank for bringing us Gates of Anubis. Now I’m always up for a cool treasure-hunting theme and ancient Egypt is the perfect location for the genre, but unless you’re willing to do something truly unique, the recipe might easily feel tired and lazy.

But with Gates of Anubis, I somehow didn’t mind that this is an overused theme that I’ve played through quite literally hundreds of times before. Sure, you get all the tropes here, including mysterious ancient Egyptian tombs, the feared deity Anubis himself, a reanimated mummy and a swashbuckling protagonist who looks ridiculously similar to everyone’s favourite whip-wielding, Hollywood tomb raider. But somehow it all works and Popiplay executes the presentation in the best way possible.

The features promise to mix cascading reels with multiplier madness in free spins, and you get a maximum win cap of 10,200x your stake, but do these ingredients ultimately result in a satisfying video slot? Well, light your torches and ready your whips as you read through my full review below.

Where Can I Play Gates of Anubis for Real Money?

Popiplay is a fairly new video slot developer, having started operations in 2022. And although it managed to build a strong reputation in the few years of activity it’s had, the studio’s games aren’t as widely accessible as those of more prominent providers. So, if you need a helping hand in finding a place to play, check out my list of the best Gates of Anubis online casinos.

All the sites I’ve included offer Gates of Anubis and Popiplay games as part of their varied game library, which they support further with excellent promotional offers and robust customer support. They also run with licenses from some of the best casino regulators in the world including the MGA and UKGC.

Pro Tips:

As with most video slots, Gates of Anubis runs using a random number generator that makes sure all wins are randomised. So, there’s no way to influence the outcome of your spins. But you can still use some strategy to make the most out of your bankroll and hopefully score wins that close in on the 10,200x maximum win cap.

Bear in mind that Gates of Anubis is a highly volatile slot. So, special features and wins can be scarce to come by. I went through more than 100 base game spins before I finally got my first free spins trigger. And although cascading reels can be quite rewarding in the base game, the most exciting mechanics are reserved for the free spins bonus. You’ll want to trigger it as often as possible so you should stick to a relatively low bet level that can buy you more spins with your gambling budget. By increasing your chances of triggering free spins, you increase the likelihood of dropping big multiplier symbols that award you with the game’s highest wins.

Gates of Anubis Slot Bonus Features

Anubis’ deadly servants chase you across six reels and five rows, where cluster pays deliver the game’s rewards. To put together a winning cluster, you’ll need eight or more identical symbols connected vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The more symbols you have in your cluster, the better the final payout.

At the bottom of the paytable you get royal card symbols J to A and these can give you wins of up to 8x your win for clusters of 12 or more symbols. Further up the paytable, you get the eye of Horus, ankh, scarab, mummy and treasure hunter symbols. These can score you pays of up to 50x your stake for five-of-a-kind symbols.

There are even more symbols and special features to discover in these forbidden halls, so read on below to find out all about them.

Wilds

Gates of Anubis has no wild symbols, so you can’t rely on these handy tokens to step in and save the day.

Cascading Reels

Whenever you score a winning combination, the winning symbols are removed from the reels, making space for new symbols to cascade down from the top of the reels. This creates the chance to put together even more winning combinations, which in turn retrigger the mechanic. This goes on and on until you have no more wins on the board.

Scatter Symbol

Scatter symbols show the titular gates of Anubis in their full glory, and you’ll need a minimum of four tokens to access the bonus rounds. Four, five or six triggering scatter symbols award you 10, 20 or 30 free spins, respectively. You can also land scatter symbols during free spins and three or more of them in a single round adds five free spins to your tally.

Scatter symbols are also the highest paying symbols in the game with payouts of up to 100x your stake for six identical symbols.

Free Spins

The biggest gameplay addition in free spins is multiplier symbols which land with random multiplier values of up to 100x. These symbols remain present on the reels for any subsequent cascades that follow an initial spin and in doing so can affect several different winning combinations. Multiplier values are then added up and applied to the total win.

RTP & Volatility of Gates of Anubis Slot

Gates of Anubis has a high level of volatility, so don’t expect to be triggering special features and landing huge wins on every spin. It’s supported by an RTP of 96.11%, which is quite suitable for this kind of game. You get an even overall math model which ought to satisfy players looking for a more challenging experience, as you chase after the online slot’s 10,200x max win potential.

The video slot is developed by Popiplay, a Scandinavian provider founded in 2022. The developer has already begun building a strong reputation, and you can rest assured that Gates of Anubis is a fair and safe game to play. As always, I strongly suggest that you play at a reputable online casino with gambling licenses from strong regulators such as the MGA and UKGC.

Gates of Anubis Slot on Mobile

Fire up Gates of Anubis on your smartphones and tablets thanks to the game’s excellent mobile compatibility. The video slot runs brilliantly on mobile browsers on both Android and iOS platforms, and you can experience it in both portrait and landscape modes. You get the same features, graphics and win potential as you would on a desktop, although the interface has elements moved around to make playing on smaller screens with touchscreen controls a lot easier.

Popiplay is off to a good start and while Gates of Anubis isn’t exactly a revelation, it is nonetheless a step in the right direction.
To begin with, the visuals look spectacular. The atmosphere is perfectly set thanks to hauntingly gorgeous backdrops and wonderfully designed symbols that litter the screen. You also get a moody soundtrack that adequately fits the setting. But the cherry on the cake is the game’s animation. Every spin feels alive, with symbols satisfyingly bouncing onto the reels. Winning combinations fly off the board and it’s an absolute joy to see more symbols cascade down from above. You even get a lovely animation when free spins are triggered, with the protagonist being chased around by an evil-looking mummy.
But while the visuals are a hit, the slot’s features are more of a mixed bag. The base game is quite barebones and while you get cascading reels to deliver some interesting winning streaks from time to time, it’s still lacking that extra bit of excitement. The saving grace here is the fact that regular symbols can give you great payouts reaching up to 25x your stake.
The best mechanics are kept for the free spins feature and this mainly revolves around multiplier symbols. It’s a rewarding feature that gave me some of the best wins I got in the slot, but it feels very generic, like something I’ve experienced loads of times before. It works well enough, but it’s missing that original touch that could seriously take the game to the next level.
All things considered, is still a great game to play. It’s fun, looks incredible and can lead to some amazing rewards with its 10,200x max win potential. But it lacks innovation and originality which would have pushed the game and its potential longevity much further.
