Someone has opened the Necronomicon and unleashed the Lovecraftian monsters within. The Cultist slot doesn’t explicitly mention H. P. Lovecraft and his Cthulhu mythos, but as I have buried my head in many Lovecraft stories over the years, it’s clear to me that Popiplay, was inspired by this horror author.

The game’s biggest symbol is the Red Tentacle, followed by the Monster symbol, a Cthulhu-inspired beast. The minions of this evil deity come next, including three different monsters, after which there are 5 traditional playing card icons serving as the lower-paying symbols.

A combination of 3 or more symbols is needed for a win. These must appear on one of the game’s 15 fixed paylines, which move from left to right.

If it’s not immediately apparent, I loved this mystic backdrop, and I liked the accompanying music even more. It’s not over-the-top or repetitive, and it lacks the tinny and grating quality found on many online slots. It’s a good fit for anyone who likes horror and the occult, as well as players who enjoy stepping over to the dark side on occasion.

I am often wary when games feature unique designs and styles, as sometimes it feels like they have put all of their resources into making it look good and left little actual substance. That’s not the case with this game, though, and the design is supported by a sizable 5×5 grid with 15 paylines and features such as Wild multipliers, free spins with respins, and an Expanding Grid.

This is not a complicated slot. The Halloween theme, with its elements of Lovecraft lore and the image of the creepy follower with glowing red eyes, is original, but the game itself is not. As with most slots, there isn’t much interaction or choice, so you just need to choose a comfortable bet amount and stick to it.

As noted already, the Buy Bonus option is not available to UK players, and the only mistake you can make is to wager more than you intended. So, take your time, get your wager right, and check the game rules and paytable (via the button in the bottom-left corner) if you’re not sure about something.

Cultist Slot Bonus Features

I was disappointed to see that the Cultist base game was not loaded with Wild Reels or Cascading Reels, like several other Popiplay slots, but I got over this quickly when the Wilds started landing, and I unlocked my first main feature after about 50 demo spins.

Wild Multipliers

The Red Tentacle can transform into a Wild Multiplier. It substitutes for main game symbols and adds a random multiplier of 2x, 3x, 5x, or 10x.

These symbols appeared a few times in my review, and they can make a big difference. If they land in the right order, they can produce some of the biggest payouts outside of the free spins feature.

Scatter Symbol

The green orb is the game’s Scatter symbol. It can appear on all game reels and you need 3 or more for the feature, at which point the grid expands.

Free Spins/Respins

The ritual is over, and the initiation has begun. This is the main game feature, and it can expand the grid to 5×7. Look out for the Opening Reel symbol, as it adds an extra reel to the left and right part of the grid.

You get 3 respins, but the counter resets for every Opening Reel or Tentacle symbol that appears. These Tentacles add extra multipliers to the reels, the value of which depends on the colour of the tentacle:

• Blue: 1+, 2+, 5+, 10+, or 20+
• Green: 1+, 2+, 5+, 10+, or 20+
• Purple: 2+, 3+, 5+, 10+, or 20+

Cultist Slot on Mobile

You can delve into this creepy little sect on your mobile device, with support for Android and iOS. I began my review on desktop and was glad to see that the game was dynamic, which means it adapted to whatever screen size I used. This transferred to the mobile game as well, which looked great on tablets and phones.

I had my best experience on an iPad, where the bigger screen and crisper graphics brought this little Lovecraftian ceremony to life. But it looked and played well on an Android phone as well.

Conclusion

In my opinion, Popiplay has absolutely nailed the theme in the Cultist slot. It’s not the first slot game to tackle early 20th century occultism. It’s not even the first to adopt a Lovecraft theme, as Pragmatic Play did it with Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, but it’s not exactly a well-trodden theme and as expertly executed as the one here.

The addition of respins, high maximum payouts and a very good RTP completed my experience. It could have been better, and I would have loved to see another bonus game that took me deeper into this world, but it’s a slot that creates a great atmosphere and deserves attention.
